Paying in RMB usually costs less because your money is converted once, from pesos to yuan, instead of twice. Most Chinese suppliers, especially on Taobao, and smaller factories, price and receive in RMB.

When you pay in USD, three costs can stack up:

• Double conversion. Your bank converts pesos to dollars, then the supplier's bank converts dollars to yuan. Each conversion has its own exchange-rate margin.
• Wire and intermediary fees. International bank transfers often carry a sending fee plus deductions by intermediary banks along the way.
• Supplier buffers. Some suppliers quote a higher price in USD to protect themselves from exchange-rate swings.

• A sudden change of bank account. A message saying the supplier's account changed because of an audit, tax issue, or new branch.
• Pressure to pay immediately. "Today only" prices or threats to cancel your order.
• An account name that doesn't match. The payee name differs from the company on your contract or invoice.
